Revelations in Vaccine Safety

IOM, IACC & NVAC Meetings Expose Depth of Crisis of Faith in Nation's Immunization Plan
By SafeMinds President Theresa Wrangham
What is the intersection on meetings held by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) and the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) last week? In short, vaccine safety and a whirlwind of activity.
Monday, February 2nd opened with the third stakeholder meeting of the IOM Committee on Review of the Priorities in the National Vaccine Plan. Flying in from Colorado, I arrived late in the day and just in time to witness Barbara Loe Fisher's voice of reason assert a parent's ethical right to make health care decisions when asked if public health trumps an individual's right to choose to immunize. Later, panelist Dr. Louis Z. Cooper added that communication with parents should be honest, coordinated and based on sound vaccine safety science, which to date had been "done on the cheap" and was seriously deficient. He went on to criticize the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) spending of $300 billion on the promotion of vaccines, while spending only $20 million on vaccine safety research. These criticisms fell on deaf ears, however, as CDC's Media Director, Glen Nowak, recommendation was "less is more" in terms of information given to parents leaving many with the feeling that informed consent as it relates to immunization was viewed as problematic by the CDC.
The preliminary report by the IOM is available here with the next public meeting slated for April 14th in Washington to examine Goal 2 -Vaccine Safety. Click herefor the agenda. The meeting will be webcast and audience comments have been allowed throughout the day and emails received during the meeting are read. Written comments should be filed anytime before the last meeting on June 4 at VaccinePlan@nas.edu and to receive updates from the IOM on this process click register.
Wednesday, February 4th, the IACC convened and discussion with regard to vaccine research was again raised during public comment by SafeMinds and Autism Speaks criticizing the recent and questionable revote to remove mandated vaccine research objectives. Invited guest, Mark Noble, PhD and Director of the University of Rochester Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Institute presented to the committee the limitations of epidemiological studies on thimerosal, while highlighting that research on thimerosal was more developed than that of other vaccine components and cautioned against drawing conclusions that exceed data regarding other vaccine related questions. His recommendation to the IACC was to form a workgroup within IACC comprised of scientists, advocates and clinicians who do not have an existing bias on either side of the vaccine issue to evaluate the research issues and make recommendations as to research objectives required.

Federal Vaccine Court Rules Against Autism Families: Government's Refusal to Fund Sound Science Stacks Deck Against Vaccine-Injured Children.
|
|
One more reason to distrust the government's vaccine program, says SafeMinds
Washington, D.C. - February 12, 2009 - Autism
advocacy organization SafeMinds regrets
today's ruling by the U.S Court of Federal
Claims against three families who argued that
vaccination contributed to their child's
autism. The denial of reasonable compensation
to families was based on inadequate vaccine
safety science available to the court. The
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
is the defendant in vaccine injury
cases and is also responsible for carrying
out the very vaccine safety research that
should be integral to court decisions. This
conflict of interest means the deck is
stacked against families when they enter
"vaccine court" and is yet one more reason
for parents to doubt the integrity of the
National Immunization Program.
"The government has its thumb on the scales
of justice," said Jim Moody, director of
SafeMinds and an advisor to the Petitioners
Steering Committee of the U.S Federal Court
of Claims. "The Vaccine Injury Compensation
Act passed by Congress in 1986 gave immunity
to vaccine manufacturers and removed the
incentive to create safer products.
Meanwhile, the law only gives the illusion
that parents will have their day in court.
The process
is dysfunctional and many families will not
see justice done."
Two HHS agencies, the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of
Health (NIH), are
responsible for conducting vaccine safety
research. Even leading vaccine proponents
have accused the CDC of carrying out safety
research "on the cheap," and two major
systematic reviews of vaccine research by the
world renowned Cochrane Collaboration have
found studies to be of "poor quality" and
"inadequate." The director of the NIH
institute in charge of autism studies, Dr.
Tom Insel, has admitted that HHS has a
conflict of interest
preventing NIH from allowing autism-vaccine
science due to the court cases. Last month,
the government dominated Interagency Autism
Coordinating Committee blocked critical
vaccine-autism research studies from moving
forward even though they had been requested
by their own scientific advisors and autism
advocates. HHS gives billions of dollars to
pharmaceutical companies to develop vaccines
and build vaccine factories, and
the CDC spends billions of dollars to promote
and expand the immunization of Americans, yet
the CDC spends only $20 million on safety
studies. Even this modest research has been
placed off-limits to review by the lawyers
representing the vaccine court families while
the Department of Justice lawyers were
allowed to use it.

On Vaccinations: Consider the Source and Follow the Money
|
|
By SafeMinds Board Member Deirdre Imus for the Huffington Post
Last month, Dr. Paul Offit, Chief of the
Division of Infectious Diseases at the
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the
vaccine industry's most outspoken activist,
warned Huffington Post readers not to "risk
going unvaccinated."
When presented with conflicting information
on a critically important health issue I
generally follow two simple rules...educate
myself on the issue and "follow the money."
When it came to Dr. Paul Offit, and the
credibility of this advice, this was an easy
assignment.
I normally wouldn't waste my time responding
to Dr. Offit. After all, he is entitled to
his opinion. However, this man's relentless
campaign that includes attacking concerned
parents and the dissemination of false
information needs to be exposed for what it is.
Dr. Offit has been on a very aggressive
crusade in defense of vaccines for years.
With what appears to be unlimited resources,
Offit is routinely granted ample unchallenged
opportunities to mount his campaign in
newspapers around the country.
In recent years, Offit has become the "go-to
guy" on all things related to vaccines. While
other physicians, civic leaders and even
members of congress are denied the
opportunity to share their views on this
issue, Offit is frequently provided with
generous op-ed space to promote his views on
the safety of vaccines, the need to take away
vaccine exemptions, and the need to protect
vaccine manufacturers from any liability. In
short, if the word vaccine or autism appears
in the article, so does Dr. Offit.
In his recent Huffington editorial, Offit
continues his attack on worried parents who
choose not to vaccinate their children, or
even just spread them out a little, which the
CDC says is okay to do. He blames them for
the relatively small outbreaks of childhood
diseases. In this case, last year's 135 cases
of measles.

New Test for Mysterious Metabolic Diseases Developed at Stanford/Packard
|
|
|
STANFORD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Scientists
at Stanford University School of Medicine
have devised a much-needed way to monitor and
find treatments for a mysterious and
devastating group of metabolic diseases that
arise from mutations in cells' fuel-burning
mechanism.
Mitochondrial disorders can cause organ
failure, seizures, stroke-like episodes and
premature death. The diseases - more than
three dozen in total - arise from genetic
errors of the mitochondria, the cell
structures that process oxygen and turn food
molecules into useable energy. Mitochondrial
disorders affect one in 4,000 kids and one in
8,500 adults. They are difficult to diagnose,
and no treatments or cures exist.
But that could soon change. A team at
Stanford and Lucile Packard Children's
Hospital has discovered a biological marker
they can use to monitor the diseases. The
finding will enable researchers to hunt for
treatments and help physicians check
patients' status before health crises erupt.
The research will be published online Feb. 9
in the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences.
"When a car engine doesn't work right, it
smokes," said senior study author Greg Enns,
MB, ChB, who is professor of pediatrics at
Stanford University School of Medicine and
director of the biochemical genetics program
at Packard. "What we looked for is, in
essence, biochemical smoke."
Like a car engine, when mitochondria are not
burning fuel cleanly, they kick out nasty
gunk. Defective mitochondria produce large
quantities of oxygen free radicals - highly
reactive molecules that damage DNA and cell
structures. Comparing patients who have a
mitochondrial disorder with healthy people in
the control group, Enns' team searched for
signs that free radicals overtax patients'
natural antioxidant defense systems. And they
found it.

Support Dr. Andrew Wakefield
|

Five years after launching a campaign to
discredit the work of Dr. Andrew Wakefield,
freelance journalist Brian Deer and the
Sunday Times in the UK made additional
allegations on Sunday, February 8, 2009,
including three pages of articles, while
offering no new evidence re: Dr. Wakefield
"fixing" research data. These allegations
have no basis in fact and have been fully
addressed during Dr. Wakefield's response to
the GMC prosecution, now well into its second
year.
We join worldwide autism organizations in
endorsing a petition calling for a formal
enquiry into the activities of this freelance

Government bans all use of mercury in Sweden
|
|
|
The Government today decided to introduce a
blanket ban on mercury. The ban means that
the use of dental amalgam in fillings will
cease and that it will no longer be permitted
to place products containing mercury on the
Swedish market.
"Sweden is now leading the way in removing
and protecting the environment from mercury,
which is non-degradable. The ban is a strong
signal to other countries and a Swedish
contribution to EU and UN aims to reduce
mercury use and emissions," says Minister for
the Environment Andreas Carlgren.
The Government's decision means that products
containing mercury may not be placed on the
Swedish market. In practice this means that
alternative techniques will have to be used
in dental care, chemical analysis and the
chloralkali industry. The Swedish Chemicals
Agency will be authorised to issue
regulations on exceptions or grant exemptions
in individual cases.
In connection with the Government's decision, waste containing mercury will be disposed of in deep geological repositories in other EU countries. The Swedish market for hazardous waste is small. Last spring, a government inquiry established that there are existing repositories for waste containing mercury in, for example, Germany that more than adequately meet the safety requirements on which Swedish legislation is based. Creating a new Swedish repository would be around 15 times more expensive than depositing waste in existing facilities in the EU. The bodies consulted on this matter shared the inquiry's conclusions.

New Worries About Gardasil Safety
|
|
CBS Evening News Exclusive: Vaccine-Safety Group Study Shows Higher Instance Of Medical Side-Effects Than Another Vaccine
(CBS) There are new concerns about Gardasil,
the vaccine that prevents a virus that caused
cervical cancer. It's approved for girls as
young as nine. And five million have received
it since it was approved two years ago. The
FDA and its maker insist it's safe. But CBS
News investigative correspondent Sharyl
Attkisson has exclusive information on some
very serious side effects.
Gabby Swank was a straight-A student and
cheerleader.
But that was before she became very ill
following the standard dose of three Gardasil
vaccinations, Attkisson reports.
You know the commercial. It showed teenage
girls saying "I want to be one less" who gets
the HPV virus, which is linked to cervical
cancer.
"It was like a big hype among my friends,
because we're like, 'we're gonna get it'
because we felt almost pressured by the
commercials," Gabby said.
Gabby got sicker after each shot, progressing
to seizures, strokes and heart problems. It
was her neurologist who suspected Gardasil
was to blame.
"I think there are too many people having
serious long-term side-effects," said
neurologist Dr. Dwight Lindholm.
Last fall, the government and vaccine maker
Merck concluded there's no link between
Gardasil and serious adverse events like
Gabby's. But a new analysis calls that
finding into question.

Much High Fructose Corn Syrup Contaminated With Mercury, New Study Finds
|

Brand-Name Food Products Also Discovered to Contain Mercury
Much High Fructose Corn Syrup Contaminated
With Mercury, New Study Finds
Minneapolis - Mercury was found in nearly 50
percent of tested samples of commercial high
fructose corn syrup (HFCS), according to a
new article published today in the scientific
journal, Environmental Health. A separate
study by the Institute for Agriculture and
Trade Policy (IATP) detected mercury in
nearly one-third of 55 popular brandname food
and beverage products where HFCS is the first
or second highest labeled
ingredient-including products by Quaker,
Hershey's, Kraft and Smucker's.
HFCS use has skyrocketed in recent decades as
the sweetener has replaced sugar in many
processed foods. HFCS is found in sweetened
beverages, breads, cereals, breakfast bars,
lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments.
On average, Americans consume about 12
teaspoons per day of HFCS. Consumption by
teenagers and other high consumers can be up
to 80 percent above average levels.
"Mercury is toxic in all its forms," said
IATP's David Wallinga, M.D., and a co-author
in both studies. "Given how much high
fructose corn syrup is consumed by children,
it could be a significant additional source
of mercury never before considered. We are
calling for immediate changes by industry and
the FDA to help stop this avoidable mercury
contamination of the food supply."
In the Environmental Health article, Dufault
et al. found detectable levels of mercury in
nine of 20 samples of commercial HFCS.
Dufault was working at the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration when the tests were done in
2005. She and co-authors conclude that
possible mercury contamination of food
chemicals like HFCS was not common knowledge
within the food industry that frequently uses
the sweetener. While the FDA had evidence
that commercial HFCS was contaminated with
mercury four years ago, the agency did not
inform consumers, help change industry
practice or conduct additional testing.

Obama Administration Proposes Binding International Mercury Treaty
|
|
From The Jurist
The administration of US President
Barack Obama on Monday proposed the
development of a binding international treaty
to regulate global mercury levels. The
announcement by US State Department Deputy
Assistant Secretary for Environment and
Sustainable Development Daniel Reifsnyder
came at the 25th Session of the Governing
Council/Global Ministerial Environmental
Forum, a meeting of global environment
ministers held by the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP)in Nairobi,
Kenya. In his statement , Reifsnyder said:
We have now arrived at a point where
there is a call to come together to launch an
Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to
develop an international agreement on
mercury. The United States now joins that
call. We are prepared, Mr. Co-Chair to help
lead in developing a global legally binding
instrument for mercury.

Visit the Age of Autism

The Age of Autism is the nation's first daily
Web newspaper for the
environmental-biomedical community - those
who believe autism is an environmentally
induced illness, that it is treatable, and
that children can recover. For the most part,
the major media in the United States aren't
interested in that point of view, they won't
investigate the causes and possible
biomedical treatments of autism
independently, and they don't listen to the
most important voices - those of the parents.
