The Combating Autism Act

Introduction of Revised Language Pending

The Combating Autism Act of 2005 must be co- sponsored by a majority of members in the Senate and House. This is the first and most important step toward making this bill a law, which would enable the federal government to pick where the Children's Health Act of 2000 will leave off when it expires later this year.

The Combating Autism Act of 2005 is supported by all major autism organizations, including A-CHAMP, Autism One, Autism Society of America, Autism Speaks, COSAC, Cure Autism Now, Dan Marino Foundation, First Signs, Generation Rescue, Moms Against Mercury, National Alliance for Autism Research, National Autism Association, NoMercury, OAR, Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center, SafeMinds, Talk About Curing Autism, TalkAutism, The Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology, Unlocking Autism and US Autism and Asperger’s Association

The original version of the bill introduced to Congress did not adequately address the allocation of resources to research that would focus on the role of environmental factors in the cause of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Members of the autism community worked together to develop a revised bill that we felt addressed these issues and would generate support among most segments of the community. We anticipate that the revised version of the Combating Autism Act will be introduced in Congress in the very near future.

For many teens and preteens, summer is a time to immerse themselves in rigorous sports activities which challenge the mind and body. Now, children and teens with autism can have the same opportunities.

Extreme Sports Camp is an overnight summer camp in Aspen, Colorado, where older children with autism spectrum disorders can safely engage in sustained physical activities and find personal growth through a supportive, individualized, and adaptive program of recreational sports.

The Coalition for SafeMinds (Sensible Action For Ending Mercury-Induced Neurological Disorders) is a private nonprofit organization founded to investigate and raise awareness of the risks to infants and children of exposure to mercury from medical products, including thimerosal in vaccines. SafeMinds supports research on the potential harmful effects of mercury and thimerosal. Our mission is to end the health and personal devastations caused by the needless use of mercury in medicines.
